History

The Karnataka Medical Council (KMC) came into existence in the year 1931 and was originally called THE MYSORE MEDICAL COUNCIL. It was the exact replica of General Medical Council , England. The specialty of Mysore Medical Council was that it came into existence years before Indian Medical Council which started in 1956.

The Mysore Medical Council was renamed as Karnataka Medical Council when Mysore state was renamed as Karnataka in the year 1956.

The KMC did not have an office of its own and hence moved from place to place till it settled in a small room in Government Dental College premises , Bangalore. The government invited the following 4 members to take over the task of KMC:

1). Dr.Chikkananjappa (physician)

2). Dr.Desai. P.R (Obstretician & Gynaecologist , Ex-director of health service)

3). Dr.Krishnamurthy.K (Surgeon)

4). Dr.Shadakshrappa (Physician)

Dr. Chikkananjappa was unanimously elected President of KMC.

At that time KMC had only 5 employees – Registrar(1) , clerks(3) , attender(1).

Various measures were taken to improve the transparency and functioning of KMC namely:

1). All transactions to be made through Demand Drafts only.

2). Registrations of all doctors was made compulsory.

3). Letters were sent to all the Medical Colleges regarding the same.

4). No Objection Certificate (NOC) was made compulsory for all migrating doctors.

5). Conduct of Judiciory Proceedings.

The above measures were appreciated by other state medical councils. In 1984 , KMC office was shifted to Laksmi Complex , Fort Road , Bangalore.

Regular judiciary proceedings used to be conducted once in a month. As the number of complaints received by KMC was on the rise, the meetings were held once in 15 days and then started being conducted once a week.

The KMC office today stands proudly as “VAIDYAKEEYA BHAVANA”, #70 , K.R.Road , Basavanagudi , Bangalore.
